Japanese Sabitoru Rust Eraser

Overview

The Japanese Sabitoru Rust Eraser is a simple and effective abrasive cleaning block designed for removing rust, oxidation, patina, and stubborn surface staining from knife blades and other metal surfaces.

Unlike the fiberglass pen, which excels at small spots and tight detail work, the Sabitoru provides a larger working surface that's better suited for cleaning and restoring broader areas of a blade.

Its flexible abrasive material works much like an eraser—allowing you to work directly over affected areas with controlled pressure until the unwanted rust or discoloration is removed. Sabitoru rust erasers are made in Japan and are widely used for maintaining carbon-steel Japanese knives and tools.

Cliff's Notes

Where our fiberglass pen is better for small rust spots and precision work, the Sabitoru is what I'd reach for when there's a larger area of surface rust or staining that needs to be cleaned up.

Available in multiple grits, the Sabitoru allows you to choose the level of abrasive action appropriate for the job from more aggressive rust removal to finer cleanup and finishing.

Soak the eraser in water for 5–10 minutes before use, then use light pressure and work in the same direction as the existing grain or scratch pattern of the blade. That helps keep the resulting finish as uniform as possible.

Remember that this is an abrasive, not a chemical rust remover. It can change the appearance of polished, etched, coated, or other specialty finishes, so start gently and only work the area as much as necessary.
